Music Industry How To

As you may or may not know, I do a lot of research on the music industry. It really gives me an edge when I'm looking to grow my brand or expand my marketing skills. There are many resources out there, and I use a lot of them. Here's one of my favorites. I hope it starts you on the very fulfilling path to music business know-how.

It's called Music Industry How To and it's all about being your guide to the music industry.

One of my favorite posts was this one called "Revealed: Why Gaining Fame and Making Money Require Different Strategies". It really opened my eyes to the fact that, for the majority of my music career, my focus had been on gaining fame, yet I wondered why I'd find myself with a substantial amount of moral support and an astounding lack of financial stability.

Visit the site. There are lots of links and articles that will lead you to more music industry knowledge, if you are willing to take the advice given.

The Artist's 99%

record companies used to give artists money to make records, now they want artists to give them records to make them (the labels) money. you prove, first, that you can make records that sell. we'll take those records that were already selling, repackage, and resell them and give you less money-per-record than you were already making selling your independently produced, marketed and promoted project on your own, but now there's this major label logo on it, and we've added a couple tracks from today's hottest super-producers so we deserve 99% of everything you do in life, ever. #sharecropping

3 Music Giveaways and some stories

I recently had a young woman that i had just met tell me that I was old and I looked like i #dunndunnitall, and I thought about this.
And I said to myself, first, and then to the young woman, 'You know what? You're right.' and that was when i really began to reflect on my life's experience.
strange as it is, it really has covered a lot of ground for me.
I wouldn't say I could handle just anything, but i would say, at this point, it would take a whoooole lot to shock me. #shockG

Never dabble in the darkness with someone who lives there, it's a slow dance to death with the devil. Few have made it out alive. None will see that the outcome of the deal you signed, sealed in time while you dined and sipped fine wine was a lie. I won't say you're the devil. I'm not here to judge you, but I will say that you are a liar. i will also say that 'they' say 'the devil is a liar'. So, that's what will say.

ingredients in a straw-ber-rita: alcohol and red. that is all.

some people get intimidated when you show them what they could be if they would be just a little more better by being just a little more better yourself. What they don't know (or don't show) is what it takes to be that. They don't know your life, son/daughter. They don't know why there's so much pep in your stride, especially when they've tried and tried to lie and change the story up at the last minute to make it seem like 'it's just business'. #funnythingis If they was handlin' it, then we wouldn't be in a predicament such as this is. #hollaifyahearme #rantandramble

This movie is about the creation and destruction of napster. extremely dope in how it captures the true influence of the world's first decentralized file sharing system. it basically changed the world. it changed the world right at the turn of the century.

saggin' spelled backwards is niggas.

saggin' spelled backwards is niggas.

interesting point made in this image. to it, i'd like to pose a few questions.

If they took us so seriously then, then what happened?
"What's the difference between a conspiracy and a strategy?" -Former IRS Agent

Did we just stop and say, 'Ok. Civil Rights. Check. Cool to sag my pants and grow some dreads now.'?
Or did "they" take us seriously enough as we're postured in the first photo to feel as if we posed an actual threat to the stability of race-based capitalism in this country?

Could strategy through marketing, sabotage, infiltration, psychology, addiction affliction and God knows what else have led us to believe that we'd accomplished enough in voting, labor, and leisure to loosen our belts, so much so that now our pants are sagging (as the second row so vividly depicts)?

Did "they" take us so seriously that "they" presented images of us in an unfavorable light, including a slanderous image of the man who happens to be the centerpiece of the first photograph?

i'm not blaming "them" for the difference in these photos. we could blame time if it makes for good tv. i'm not interested in playing a blame game. Without catalyst, provocation  or reason, i have never observed a cultural change that drastic take place.

i'm sure a snapshot of what we looked like when "they" first saw us and took us seriously enough to snatch us up looks vastly different from all three of these pictures of blackness. #thinkonthat
not funkn' with this guy (Shaka Zulu)

Oh, and stop giving "them" so much credit. It's just a coincidence that saggin' backwards spells niggas, no one is that diabolical...or are 'they'?

Hey Joe..

I may be taking it to far, but #abuseisabuse. Why are we allowed to say that Joe Jackson beat Michael Jackson into international fame, riches, and stardom, but not allowed to say that Ike Turner beat Tina Turner into legendary fame and riches?
abuse is abuse and your path is your path. some have a harder, or a more difficult time on the path than others, but that doesn't mean it's right to judge what it takes to get where many of us wish we were. And, besides, it wasn't the beating that made them famous. On the contrary, I'm sure the years of prolonged physical, mental, financial and emotional abuse broke Mike & Tina down mentally far more than any of us could imagine.
No, it wasn't getting beat that made them famous. It was nothing but hard work that made it happen. They were pushed to excel, to go above and beyond what it took to get the job done, whether or not it was by their abusers is a different conversation than the answer to the general 'What it takes to succeed?' question. Ike & Joe adapted a gorilla management style, but that won't work for everyone. Next time you think that it's ok to suffer abuse from anyone because they promise to fulfill all of your dreams, remember, first, that story never ends well, and, second, remember that it is hard work, self-propelled drive, and consistency on the right path that makes the people we look up to successful. #thinkonthat
